San Francisco, California Golden Gate Bridge

Nothing says San Francisco like the fire engine red Golden Gate Bridge. Since 1937, the nearly two-mile long structure has allowed motorists, bicyclists, and walkers to safely traverse the bay and reach Marin County. At 746 feet, the bridge's two towers are nearly 200 feet taller than the Washington Monument. The bridge provides several lookouts that provide great pictures. Plus, the Bridge Pavilion features everything from exhibits to souvenirs.

Construction on the Golden Gate Bridge began in 1933 and was completed in 1937 at a cost of over $35 million. A celebration to commemorate the bridge’s opening began on May 27 and ended one week later. A day before cars were allowed, 200,000 people traversed the bridge on foot and roller skates.

Toll and Traffic Information

Tolls on the Golden Gate Bridge, which are $6.00, are paid one-way (going south). Since the bridge is a fixed, six-lane roadway, reversible lanes are required to aid traffic flow during the heavy morning/evening commute hours and weekend tourist times.
